Open, and we're at an airport where a commercial jet has landed, and the last man off the plane happens to be Pride Pro's self-proclaimed Icon, James Williams, rocking his RIBERA Steakhouse Jacket and a very pleased-with-himself smile.
Pride Pro Wrestling! It's been a minute. I'm back from Japan, I'm back from Kamikaze Pro, and I feel like I'm showing up to Phenomenon as a better wrestler.
Icon sweeps a hand through his hair, stepping away from the plane and causing the camera to follow behind him as he heads for his car.
The elimination gauntlet for the Coastal title is now on my doorstep. For the past week I've been tagging with my good buddy Starr against some of the best tag teams in the entire world. And we beat quite a few of them, too.
But somehow the importance of THIS MATCH has not gotten lost on me, even after it changed just a little bit and added one more Iconic competitor to the mix. Four of the best in Pride are all that's left standing in my way of being the first Coastal Champion, and I gotta' ask them something.
Icon stops, setting his bag up and turning to the camera. It feels like he's been wanting to say this awhile.
Are you more ready than you have been in your entire life for a match? Because you're going to have to be. I'm sore, tired, I haven't slept, but man..I feel GOOD. I feel excited. I feel, you could say, ICONIC.
And yeah, I get it, I'm the rookie. I'm the new guy. I haven't gotten my feet as wet as they need to be yet. I don't really have a strategy for this match--how can you when it's a five way elimination--but then, I don't act and react based on strategy. I just know like I have always known since day one, that I'm different. I know I'm special. I know I can do things in that ring that very few people can do, and that's helped me so far so why fix something that ain't broken, right?
And we've seen it for ourselves, folks. Icon glares at the camera, intensity burning in his eyes. He is speaking every word with conviction and belief, having convinced himself he has what it takes to win his very first championship here and now.
Deacon. Spider. Anderson and Michaels. Anybody else in this type of match would be intimidated with THAT level of talent. But Icons don't get intimidated. Pressure doesn't bother people, and pressure doesn't especially bother Icons. All I can think about is just staying in the match. Surviving long enough to land four I-Triggers, because I KNOW that move will bring me to the promised land.
And then after I become Coastal Champion? Who knows. Again, I'm not a strategy guy. All I know is the people coming to see Phenomenon are gonna' be witness to a Phenomenon, alright, they will be witness to one of the most exciting competitors in the game becoming the INaugural Coastal Champion.
Already in my career I've had main event billing, I've competed for championships, I've been in the ring with big guys, small guys, technical guys, brawlers and every single one of them comes away scarcely able to believe what they saw and what they experienced after wrestling The Icon.
A self-confident smile as he grabs ahold of his carry-on again. In the distance we see his car, so we must be at the destination.
This is the time, this is the place and this match is the match where I follow up on my goal and keep my promise to this Iconic army of fans I now have ALL over the world. Every time they buy a t-shirt or an autograph or come out to see me they show me that I'm not doing this alone, that we're winning everything TOGETHER, and that we got to this match and this championship opportunity together. We built that.
Icon finally reaches his car but you have to know, the way he looks down at it and sighs with a slump of the shoulders and the way he tosses his bag in the car, that THIS destination isn't the last and isn't the one he'll be satisfied with.
I just wonder if there's anybody in this match that can keep up with us. Guess we find out soon, huh?
Into the started car he goes, and we fade.
