Since it had been announced twenty four hours prior that she would be returning to the ring, Jessica had been going through her house and getting some things together. It had been awhile since she competed competitively in the ring and she had no idea where half her stuff was. So after bringing up a bag from the basement, Jessica was about to go through it when her cellphone rang. Without even looking to see who it was, Jessica pulled it from her pocket and put it to her ear.
“Hello?”
She had barely gotten the word out of her mouth before the person on the other end said something.
“Please tell me you’re not stupid enough to stay in Miami and ride out this storm?!”
“I’m sure Irma isn’t going to be that bad.”
The voice coming from the other end instantly sounded alarmed.
“Jessica…”
“Summer…”
Jessica replied with a sigh as she got from the couch and walked over toward the window. As she pushed the curtain aside, Jessica took a look outside. It wasn’t too pretty out there.
“Look, I have a suitcase packed. Not for that. But if it gets too bad, I promise to get out of here.”
“Glad to hear I won’t need to come bail you out on a boat.”
Her best friend responded with a laugh as she let out a sigh of relief.
“But wait a minute…”
“What?”
“If you’re already have a packed suitcase, where were you going?”
Apparently, Summer hadn’t heard the news yet.
“Back to the ring.”
“Really? Why?”, she questioned skeptically, “Last I heard you were hanging up the boots for good.”
Jessica shrugged as she answered.
“Just something I have to do.”
Summer being Summer knows better than this. Something was up. And knowing Jessica the way she does, she has a good idea what that something was.
“Is there a guy involved?”
When Jessica didn’t answer right away, Summer knew that’s what it was.
“Just don’t do anything stupid.”
Jessica was quick to question.
“When do I ever do anything stupid?”
“Remember that time when…”
Jessica rolled her eyes as Summer went on to remind her of some of her exploits. When she was finished, Jessica was sounding a little less than amused as her friend chuckled.
“Are you done?”
“For now.”
Summer cleared her throat to keep the rest of her laughter at bay.
“I’ll keep in touch. Take care of yourself, Jessy.”
“Don’t worry about me. I know what I’m doing.”
Before Summer had a chance to make a smart remark about what she said, Jessica ended the call with a smile. It was good to have friends that checked on you, even if you hung up on them.
